What It Does
This tool builds a wa.me click-to-chat link and encodes it as a QR code. Scanning it opens a WhatsApp conversation with your number — with your suggested first message already typed if you add one — and crucially, neither party has to save the other's number first. You can generate this for any number you control, including one you have never messaged from.
When to Use It
- You put a code on a shop window or delivery bag so customers can start a chat without saving your number.
- You want a specific enquiry to arrive already labelled — a pre-filled 'I'd like a quote for…' tells you which poster the person scanned.
- You run a support desk and want a code on the receipt that opens a chat instead of a phone queue.
- You are on a market stall and want repeat customers to be able to message you the next week without hunting for a card.
Worked Examples
Number typed the way people write it
Spaces and a plus sign, exactly as anyone would type it. The analysis reports which characters had to be stripped — wa.me takes digits and nothing else, and silently rejects the rest.
Shop enquiry with a pre-filled message
A different message per poster tells you which one the enquiry came from, with no tracking code and no analytics.
Local number, no country code
The most common failure. WhatsApp needs 447700900123 — country code first, leading zero dropped. The analysis flags the shape before you print it.
Common Mistakes
- Writing the number the way you would say it. wa.me accepts digits only — no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes, no brackets. WhatsApp rejects anything else with an unhelpful 'phone number shared via url is invalid' page. This tool strips the formatting for you and tells you it did.
- Leaving off the country code. A local-format number produces a link that either fails or, occasionally, opens a chat with an unrelated person in another country who happens to hold that number.
- Writing a long pre-filled message. Every character of the message is encoded into the QR, so a paragraph makes a visibly denser code that is harder to scan from a distance. Keep it to a short sentence.
- Using a number that is not registered on WhatsApp. The link is built from the number alone and cannot check registration, so a code pointing at a landline or an unregistered mobile scans perfectly and then dead-ends.
