A QR code generated here is static, which means the destination is encoded directly into the pattern itself. It never expires and it will keep working forever, but it also cannot be changed. If you print a code and later move the page it points to, every printed copy is dead. If you need to change the destination after printing, you need what is usually called a dynamic QR code, which encodes a short redirect URL that you can repoint from a dashboard. That requires an account and a hosted redirect service, so it is a different kind of product from a free in-browser generator.

Level L recovers about 7 percent of the code, M about 15 percent, Q about 25 percent and H about 30 percent. Higher levels are more robust, but the extra recovery data takes space, so the code grows to a larger version with more and smaller modules. For a code shown on a screen or printed cleanly on paper, M is a good default. Choose Q or H for anything that will be printed on packaging, exposed to weather, placed where it may be scratched or partly obscured, or given a logo. If you find yourself needing level H just to fit a long URL, shorten the URL instead.

The most common cause by far is an unescaped special character in the network name or password. A Wi-Fi payload uses semicolons and colons as field separators, so a password containing a semicolon, comma, colon, backslash or double quote must have those characters escaped with a backslash. If they are not, the payload is silently cut short at the first separator and the phone tries to connect with a truncated password, with no error message anywhere. This tool escapes those characters automatically and tells you which ones needed it. The other common causes are picking the wrong security type, and forgetting to tick the hidden-network option for a network that does not broadcast its name.

The amount of data matters just as much: more data means more modules packed into the same space, so each module is physically smaller and harder for a camera to resolve. That is why shortening a URL genuinely improves scannability rather than just looking tidier. Nothing you type and no logo you upload ever leaves your device, and there is no request to our servers when you generate or download a code. This matters more here than for most tools, because the inputs can include your Wi-Fi password or your personal contact details. You can confirm it by opening your browser developer tools, switching to the network tab and generating a code: you will see no outbound requests.

For print, choose PDF or SVG. Both are vector formats, meaning the code is stored as shapes rather than pixels, so it is effectively infinite resolution: the same file prints perfectly sharp on a business card or a billboard. The PDF is generated at a real physical size you pick, from 30mm up to 200mm, so you can hand it straight to a printer. For screens, choose PNG and pick an exact output width, from 512 px up to 8192 px. The size is an absolute pixel target rather than a multiplier, so a simple code and a dense one both come out at the resolution you asked for, and the readout shows the exact dimensions plus how wide the file can print at 300 dpi, the usual commercial print threshold. That is what HD means here: enough resolution that the module edges stay perfectly square rather than turning into soft grey blocks. JPEG is offered for convenience, but avoid it where you can, because its lossy compression creates faint ringing artifacts around the hard black and white edges that scanners depend on. Both the PNG and the preview are drawn straight from the module grid rather than by rasterising the SVG, so module edges always land exactly on pixel boundaries.
